Migrate to Java Web Start from Java Plug-In Now

Steven Chan - Wed, 2019-02-27 09:40

Since we originally announced availability of Java Web Start for Oracle E-Business Suite 12.2 and 12.1 in April 2017 some developments have taken place. The bottom line is that we highly recommend all our Oracle E-Business Suite customers to migrate your Oracle E-Business Suite client tier to use Java Web Start (JWS) without delay.

Some of the recent expected developments that increase the importance of moving to Java Web Start include:

In addition to this, Oracle E-Business Suite has released the following:

Begin Your Migration to Java Web Start

My Oracle Support Note 2188898.1, Using Java Web Start with Oracle E-Business Suite contains details about how you can migrate an existing Oracle E-Business Suite 12.2 or 12.1 environment to use Java Web Start. This includes recently added support for multiple Oracle Forms sessions.

While you transition to Java Web Start, you may ask what happens if you encounter issues using the Java Plug-in with EBS?  For the answer to this and many other important Java-related questions, refer to My Oracle Support Note 2510500.1, FAQ: Essentials of Java Usage in Oracle E-Business Suite.

Important New FAQ for Java Usage in EBS

Steven Chan - Wed, 2019-02-27 09:17

Contributing Authors:  Robert Farrington and Elke Phelps

Many of you ask about our plans for future Java usage by Oracle E-Business Suite. To help you navigate through what can sometimes seem like a maze, we have recently published an important new My Oracle Support note:

This FAQ continues work that Steven Chan started after receiving many questions from you on this topic over the years. As lead author of the FAQ, I collaborated with a number of people in the Oracle E-Business Suite and Java development and product management teams to deliver this note.

The first part of the note describes important recommended actions for Java in your Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2 or 12.1 client, application and database tiers.

In the second part of the note, you will find clear answers to many commonly asked questions. Here are some specific examples:

  • My organization is transitioning our Oracle E-Business Suite environments to Java Web Start. What if we encounter issues with the Java Plug-in during this period?
  • Can I use multiple JRE versions to access Oracle E-Business Suite and other systems from the same desktop?
  • Will JDK 11 be certified with Oracle E-Business Suite?

We plan to keep this note up-to-date with our latest guidance. We hope you'll find it worth reading, bookmarking, and adding to your MOS Favorites.

Feel free to leave comments and suggestions on this article. And as always, remember that to obtain help with specific technical issues in your EBS system, you'll need to log a service request in My Oracle Support.

Now Available: HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) with EBS 12.2 and 12.1

Steven Chan - Fri, 2019-02-22 09:48

We've recently updated our enabling Transport Layer Security (TLS) documentation (see References section below) to include guidelines for deploying HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) with Oracle E-Business Suite Releases 12.2 and 12.1. HSTS allows you to specify a time period during which all browser communication must only use HTTPS. Using HSTS with Oracle E-Business Suite is an optional configuration.

If you plan to configure HSTS for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2 or 12.1, we recommend the following practices:

  • Configure HSTS at the TLS termination point (for example at the Oracle HTTP Server (OHS) or the load balancer).
  • Either use the default HTTPS port (443), or specify the HTTPS port in all URLs.
  • Begin by testing HSTS with a short time period.

Guidance for Providing Access to the Oracle E-Business Suite Database for Extensions and ...

Steven Chan - Thu, 2019-02-21 10:05

Oracle E-Business Suite is often extended, customized and integrated with third-party products. We highly recommend that you follow our published guidance for performing extensions, customizations and third-party integrations.

In addition to these guidelines, you should also follow our equivalent recommendations for granting access to Oracle E-Business Suite database objects. Our guidance for accessing an EBS database takes a least-privileges approach to providing access to database objects. The database access recommendations complement our guidance for deploying customizations, extensions and third-party integrations.
