Use of Blockchain Helps Speed Global Shipping Transactions

By Guest Author, Oracle—Oct 31, 2019

While ocean shipping has been steadily growing in recent years, multiple pressures are impacting the predictability of the far-flung supply chains and pressuring industry profits. Key to navigating these challenges for shippers, ocean carriers, terminal operators, and other parties involved with shipping ocean freight is better visibility and real-time access to information.

That’s a challenge given the sheer number of participants in a single shipment—and often leads to delays, disputes, and significant extra costs for shippers and carriers. But things are changing thanks to the help of emerging technology and the formation of a new blockchain consortium in this space pioneered by CargoSmart.

For the last year, CargoSmart and Oracle have been working together to develop a blockchain solution that aims to simplify the shipping documentation process and deliver a single source of truth for trusted, real-time sharing of information, thereby increasing trust and boosting efficiency.

More recently, CargoSmart announced a significant milestone in forming the Global Shipping Business Network (GSBN) blockchain consortium. Comprising of nine leading ocean carriers and terminal operators: CMA CGM, COSCO SHIPPING Lines, COSCO SHIPPING Ports, Hapag-Lloyd, Hutchison Ports, OOCL, Port of Qingdao, PSA International, and Shanghai International Port Group. This not-for-profit joint venture aims to accelerate the digital transformation of the shipping industry, with CargoSmart providing the resources underpinning it.

“The close cooperation between our R&D group and Oracle’s blockchain team has already helped to accelerate the development of some pilot applications. By leveraging Oracle’s enriched technical support and advice, CargoSmart has been able to achieve high levels of operational capability, reduce R&D time, and significantly improve the productivity of its blockchain application developers,” said Romney Wong, Chief Technology Officer of CargoSmart.

Oracle Recognized as a Leader in Gartner Magic Quadrant for Cloud Financial Close Solutions for Oracle EPM Cloud

Wed, 2019-10-30 08:00
Press Release
Oracle Recognized as a Leader in Gartner Magic Quadrant for Cloud Financial Close Solutions for Oracle EPM Cloud Oracle is the only EPM vendor to be named a Leader in both Cloud Financial Close Solutions and Cloud Financial Planning and Analysis Solutions Magic Quadrant reports

Redwood Shores, Calif.—Oct 30, 2019

Oracle has been named a Leader in Gartner’s 2019 “Magic Quadrant for Cloud Financial Close Solutions” report for the third consecutive year. Out of 10 companies evaluated, Oracle is positioned as a Leader based on its ability to execute and completeness of vision. Oracle is the only Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) vendor to be named a Leader in both Cloud Financial Planning and Analysis Solutions and Cloud Financial Close Solutions Magic Quadrant reports. A complimentary copy of the report is available here.

According to the report, “Leaders provide mature offerings that meet market demand and have demonstrated the vision necessary to sustain their market position as requirements evolve. The hallmark of Leaders is that they focus on, and invest in, their offerings to the point where they lead the market and can affect its overall direction. As a result, Leaders can be vendors to watch as you try to understand how new market offerings might evolve. Leaders typically possess a large, satisfied customer base (relative to the size of the market) and enjoy high visibility within the market. Their size and financial strength enable them to remain viable in a challenging economy. Leaders typically respond to a wide market audience by supporting broad market requirements; however, they may fail to meet the specific needs of vertical markets or other more-specialized segments.”

“As the EPM Cloud market matures, we are seeing more organizations looking for an integrated EPM suite to connect their financial and operational planning with financial close and reporting processes,” said Hari Sankar, Group Vice President, Product Management, Oracle.  “We are proud to be the only vendor acknowledged as a Leader by Gartner in these two Magic Quadrant reports related to EPM.”

Oracle EPM Cloud is the only complete EPM solution on a common platform that addresses financial and operational planning, consolidation and close, data management, reporting, and analysis processes. With native integration with the broader Oracle Cloud Applications suite, which includes Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Supply Chain Management (SCM), Human Capital Management (HCM) and Customer Experience (CX) applications, Oracle helps customers to stay ahead of changing expectations, build adaptable organizations, and realize the potential of the latest innovations.

Oracle’s portfolio of enterprise performance management applications has garnered industry recognition. Oracle was recently named a Leader in Gartner’s 2019 “Magic Quadrant for Cloud Financial Planning and Analysis Solutions” for Oracle EPM Cloud, making it the only vendor to be named a Leader in both of Gartner’s 2019 Magic Quadrants related to enterprise performance management.

Press Release
Penn State Elevates Student Success with Oracle University selects Oracle Student Cloud to enhance the student experience

Redwood Shores, Calif.—Oct 29, 2019

The Pennsylvania State University, one of the world’s leading higher education and research institutions, has selected Oracle Student Financial Planning Cloud to support its “One Penn State 2025” strategic vision to transform education delivery, focusing on student engagement and support. The offering will be an integral component in the university’s efforts to help reduce the cost of education while enhancing student outcomes and success.

Student Financial Planning is a key pillar in Oracle Student Cloud, a complete suite of modules designed to support the entire student lifecycle, including traditional and non-traditional learning models, with powerful automation and optimization capabilities.

Consistently ranked among the top one percent of the world’s universities, Penn State includes 24 campuses, nearly 100,000 students and 31,000 faculty and staff, all focused on creating, sharing and applying knowledge to make a positive impact on communities across the world. Acknowledging the ever-increasing student debt and drop out crises U.S. college students face, Penn State will use Oracle Student Financial Planning Cloud to help empower students to make more informed academic and financial aid decisions to accomplish their academic, professional and personal life goals.

By providing increased transparency and better management of financial aid resources, Oracle Student Financial Planning Cloud and Oracle Student Cloud will streamline financial aid processes and deliver invaluable, data-backed insights into student behaviors and successes, thus freeing administrators to focus more on supporting the academic needs of its students.

“Penn State is pleased to select Oracle’s Student Financial Planning product as a first step in transitioning our student system to the cloud and to further the institution’s strategic goals,” said Michael J. Büsges, senior director, Enterprise Projects at Penn State. “Oracle has an established track record in meeting the needs of its Higher Education customers, and we look forward to working together on this important initiative.”

Higher education institutions today are under intense pressure to enroll best-fit students, improve outcomes, and ensure student access – and be able to do more with less. At the same time, today’s students demand modern, consumer-like experiences and engagement with institutions. With $2.9 billion in financial aid (representing 15 million automated packages) already processed through Oracle Student Financial Planning Cloud, Oracle has proven solutions to help universities create a seamless student experience that leads to students’ academic success. With Oracle Student Financial Planning, universities are able to spend more time advising students on their financial aid choices and less time packaging their aid, which leads to improved student outcomes, elevated institutional standing and greater operational efficiency. Oracle Student Financial Planning also supports traditional, continued and online educational programs, as well as administrators’ compliance and integration needs.

“Leading institutions such as Penn State know that by simplifying and optimizing their operations they will be able to use resources efficiently and maximize funding sources,” said Vivian Wong, group vice president of Higher Education Development at Oracle. “Oracle’s commitment to supporting the higher education market includes our belief that no student should sacrifice their academic goals due to cost and we have created powerful cloud solutions to help universities tackle this challenge head on.”

Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse Speeds Up Decision Making at Telecom Fiji

Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse Speeds Up Decision Making at Telecom Fiji

By Peter Schutt, Senior Director, Oracle—Oct 24, 2019

Telecom Fiji, one of the largest communications providers in the remote South Pacific Fiji archipelago, needed to accelerate its digital transformation to meet the increasing demand for connectivity from local residents, businesses and tourists.

To speed up decision making to enhance customer service, Telecom Fiji is leveraging AI-powered algorithms from Oracle’s cloud-based Autonomous Data Warehouse and Analytics to integrate and sift through increasing amounts of data from multiple sources to produce actionable insights in minutes.

In the past, the IT staff spent weeks in manually-intensive processes of aggregating and correlating the data which raised the risk of errors being introduced into the results. Reports were also often late. The database administrators wrote SQL queries to generate raw data and then feed those results back to an analytics team for correlation in spreadsheets.

The autonomous database provisions easily and quickly in minutes to improve time to market, self-patches to eliminate downtime for maintenance, and auto scales capacity on demand for flexibility to maximize performance and minimize costs. Telecom Fiji would have had to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to get equally, or less powerful equipment on-premises in its data center to power the same kind of data warehouse.

The front-end Oracle Analytics platform is used to create dashboards to visualize and detail sales and marketing performance, product performance, service usage trends, service-delivery performance, and other key indicators.

“We can ask our IT staff to come up with ideas or innovative solutions on how they can use the analytics. Then they will be performing more of an advisory role to management,” said Shalvin Narayan, Head of IT, Telecom Fiji. “It did surpass my expectations because the amount of functionality and performance it was providing, with respect to the amount of investment was marvelous.”

In this video, Shalvin Narayan, Head of IT for Telecom Fiji, shares how the company is using Autonomous Database to produce real-time actionable insights in minutes rather than weeks.

Oracle Named a Leader in Translytical Data Platforms by Major Research Firm

Thu, 2019-10-24 07:00
Press Release
Oracle Named a Leader in Translytical Data Platforms by Major Research Firm According to report, customers like Oracle’s general data security capabilities, technical support and capability to support many workloads

Redwood Shores, Calif.—Oct 24, 2019

Today, Forrester Research named Oracle a leader in translytical data platforms, a database category which can handle a wide range of transactional and analytic workloads. “The Forrester Wave™: Translytical Data Platforms, Q4 2019” report1 cites that, “unlike other vendors, Oracle uses a dual-format database (row and columns for the same table) to deliver optimal translytical performance,” and that “customers like Oracle’s capability to support many workloads including OLTP, IoT, microservices, multimodel, data science, AI/ML, spatial, graph, and analytics.”

“Oracle is pleased to be acknowledged as a leader by Forrester for its translytical database capabilities,” said Juan Loaiza, Executive Vice President, Mission-Critical Database Technology, Oracle. “Oracle is setting the bar for the industry by offering a single converged database that brings together both transaction processing and analytic capabilities to provide our customers a mission-critical translytical data platform. Our converged database also provides built-in machine learning, spatial, graph, and JSON capabilities enabling our customers to easily run many kinds of workloads against the same data.”

The report states that Translytical is a hot, emerging market that delivers a unified data platform to support all kinds of workloads. The sweet spot is the ability to perform all of these workloads within a single database, leveraging innovation in in-memory, multimodel, distributed, and cloud architectures. Translytical databases can support various use cases including real-time insights, machine learning, streaming analytics, extreme transactional processing, and operational reporting.

Forrester reports on Oracle’s Translytical platform for Oracle environments. The report cites Oracle Database in-memory, an option that extends Oracle Database to support analytics in the same database as the one running transactions. Existing Oracle applications do not require any changes to the application in order to leverage Oracle Database in-memory. Unlike other vendors, Oracle uses a dual-format database (row and columnar representations for the same table) to deliver optimal translytical performance. In addition, Oracle leverages the Oracle Exadata appliance that supports a large-scale flash cache to perform fast in-memory and in-flash columnar operations. Customers like Oracle’s capability to support many workloads including OLTP, IoT, microservices, multimodel, data science, AI/ML, spatial, graph, and analytics.

According to the report, customers like the platform’s ease of use, ease of expanding existing Oracle applications to take advantage of translytics, general data security capabilities, and technical support, as well as the Cloud at Customer offering.

Oracle Health Sciences and Phlexglobal Collaborate to Reduce Operational Bottlenecks in Clinical Research

Wed, 2019-10-23 07:00
Press Release
Oracle Health Sciences and Phlexglobal Collaborate to Reduce Operational Bottlenecks in Clinical Research Integration aids timeliness and quality in regulatory compliance, enhancing audit readiness

Redwood Shores, Calif.—Oct 23, 2019

Oracle Health Sciences, a leader in eClinical technology and Phlexglobal, pioneers in the provision of Trial Master File (TMF) technology and services for the global life sciences industry, have announced enhanced integrations to accelerate the speed and accuracy of regulatory compliance and inspection readiness in clinical trials.

A TMF is a requirement that all sponsors and contract research organizations (CROs) must meet to assure that the rights, safety and well-being of trial subjects are protected, that their trials are being conducted in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) principles, and that the clinical trial data is credible to ensure audit readiness.

Phlexglobal’s PhlexEview TMF management system uses automation to streamline processes, has an open architecture to ensure easy data integration, and provides advanced functionality designed to better facilitate TMF Management.

The Oracle Health Sciences eClinical platform, integrated with the TMF, provides a comprehensive, proven and best-in-class clinical trial ecosystem for life science organizations. Oracle Health Sciences provides key integration components (i.e., data staging, business rule compliance, target data staging, and API processing) to ensure seamless and successful integrations with its applications.

Standards are Critical

Other eClinical solutions only support clinical trial functions in silos. The ability to bring together the collective institutional memory and the facilitation between systems and team members is critical, and addresses an unmet need. The challenges in integration of eClinical systems stem from the lack of standards.

Phlexglobal’s Chief Strategy Officer Karen Roy is highly active in the TMF Reference Model, an industry-led initiative to define these standards—the TMF Reference Model is now widely adopted as the TMF structure of choice. In addition, the group has developed an exchange mechanism for vendor interoperability. This critical initiative establishes a common language (both business and technical exchange mechanism) enabling different organizational departments and companies to automate the exchange of information, which satisfies end-to-end requirements and validation.

The adoption of industry standards is critical to plug-and-play coexistence in the eClinical ecosystem and what is required is a deep understanding of the right type of integration at the right time for the different integration points. The TMF Reference Model Exchange mechanism facilitates these integrations by providing a common language amongst all eClinical vendors. Eliminating inefficiencies and bottlenecks associated with disparate data silos is critical to the goal of reducing cycle times in clinical trials. Today, regulatory authorities are placing more emphasis on contemporariness and timeliness of the TMF content they receive from sponsors and CROs. To achieve this, it is critical to ensure and document most of the content quality, as specified in the ALCOA-C guidance, prior to the content being transferred to the TMF. Together, Oracle Health Sciences and Phlexglobal address this challenge.

“Our integration with Oracle Health Sciences’ industry-leading applications will save organizations significant resources, as documents only have to be checked once early in the process, which will ensure that any issues can be found and corrected in a timely manner enhancing overall quality,” said John McNeill, CEO of Phlexglobal. “Our collaboration represents a leap forward in improving clinical trials and controlling runaway costs and timelines. Our life science customers will be able to leverage industry KPIs to support business process optimization and business intelligence in clinical study startup, strengthening our regulatory compliance and global trial oversight capabilities.”

“Adoption of industry standards is critical to plug-and-play coexistence in the eClinical ecosystem,” said James Streeter, global vice president life sciences product strategy, Oracle Health Sciences. “What’s required is a deep understanding of the right type of integration at the right time for the different integration points. The TMF Reference Model Exchange Mechanism facilitates these integrations by providing a common language amongst all eClinical vendors. We strongly support this initiative.”

The Juilliard School and Rutgers Tap Oracle Cloud to Manage Educational Back-office System

Tue, 2019-10-22 07:00
Press Release
The Juilliard School and Rutgers Tap Oracle Cloud to Manage Educational Back-office System Leading colleges/universities entrust complex global HR, finance and student operations to Oracle Cloud

Redwood Shores, Calif.—Oct 22, 2019

To manage complex environments globally, leading higher education institutions The Juilliard School and Rutgers University are turning to Oracle Cloud. Both institutions, looking to accelerate student success through more efficient operations across multiple schools and campuses, have chosen Oracle Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Cloud, Oracle Human Capital Management (HCM) Cloud, and Oracle Student Cloud.

Founded in 1905, The Juilliard School is a world-famous leader in performing arts education. The school’s mission is to provide the highest caliber of artistic education for gifted musicians, dancers, and actors from around the world. Located in New York City, Juilliard offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in dance, drama and music. Beyond its New York campus, Juilliard is now defining new directions in global performing arts education through its new branch campus in Tianjin, China, The Tianjin Juilliard School, and the global K-12 curricula.

Adopting a global operating model created challenges and complexity for Juilliard’s IT staff. Oracle Cloud provides a unified platform that will enable Juilliard to deliver an exceptional experience in both English and Chinese, and importantly, can be managed with existing IT resources. Once deployed, the Oracle Student Cloud solution will support approximately 2,000 Juilliard students across both campuses and 800 faculty and staff using the ERP, Student, and HCM Cloud solutions in New York.

“The opening of The Tianjin Juilliard School will broaden access to Juilliard’s world-class performing arts education across China and Asia,” said Carl Young, CIO of The Juilliard School. “With Oracle Cloud we will be able to provide our campuses in New York and Tianjin with unified, modern, multi-lingual systems that will have a significant impact on information management, which will ultimately help us better serve our students.”

Rutgers is a leading national research university and the state of New Jersey’s preeminent, comprehensive public institution of higher education. Established in 1766, the university is the eighth oldest higher education institution in the United States and home to more than 150 undergraduate majors, more than 400 graduate programs, and 300 research centers and institutes.

The daunting scale of Rutgers—with more than 70,000 students across 29 different schools and colleges at several campus locations—means it faced different, yet similarly formidable, issues of complexity. As part of a bold five-year plan to modernize and unify its key systems, Rutgers chose Oracle Cloud.

“We strive to provide new and better experiences for our students,” said Michele Norin, senior vice president and chief information officer at Rutgers University. “The size and scale of Rutgers presents many difficulties as we work to manage and develop our systems. Oracle Cloud helps us meet our goals, stay on the forefront of higher education as it evolves, and enable our students to be more successful.”

Oracle Student Cloud is an integral component to an institution’s efforts to reduce educational costs while enhancing student outcomes and success. Oracle SFP Cloud streamlines the financial aid processes and delivers invaluable, data-backed insights into student successes, freeing administrators to focus more on supporting the academic needs of its students. Oracle ERP Cloud provides the financial solutions needed for institutions to enhance productivity, reduce costs and improve controls. Oracle HCM Cloud supports the changing business requirements around talent management and talent acquisition while furthering workforce productivity.

Moat Wins Adweek “Reader’s Choice” Award for Best Brand Safety/Verification Solution

Moat Wins Adweek “Reader’s Choice” Award for Best Brand Safety/Verification Solution

By Kurt Kratchman, GVP, Product Development, Oracle Data Cloud—Oct 21, 2019

If you want to find the best product or service, you should ask the people who know that product or service best for their recommendations.

Want a reliable dishwasher? Check out the online reviews from appliance installers and repairmen. In the market for a new car?  Explore the consumer satisfaction surveys from thousands of current owners. Searching for the perfect pizza in Pittsburgh? Pick up a copy of the “Best of Pittsburgh” poll in the local City Paper.

The same holds true in digital advertising, which is why we are so honored and delighted to announce that Moat by Oracle Data Cloud is the winner of the 2019 Adweek “Readers’ Choice: Best of Tech” Award for Brand Safety/Verification.

The awards are based on an Adweek reader survey in which more than 50,000 votes were cast by executives from leading brands and agencies for their favorite technology providers and solutions. These experts know our industry the best, as they evaluate and make mission-critical decisions on a daily basis about which technologies, products, and solutions they should use to support their brands.

Equally important, these executives measure success by the real-world impact of their marketing investments. Therefore, they dedicate significant time and resources to finding technology partners who can help keep their brands safe, ensure their ads are viewable, and protect their campaigns from invalid traffic and fraud, which are the cornerstone of our Moat products.

Reinforcing Moat’s industry leadership, MediaPost editor-in-chief Joe Mandese noted in a column last week that Moat “has become the closest thing to a de facto currency for digital audience attention.”

Moat offers a range of products to help customers ensure their advertising dollars are well-spent, including our industry-leading Moat Analytics and Pre-Bid by Moat, which help identify brand-safe, fraud-safe, and viewable inventory before an ad is placed. Part of that solution is Oracle’s Contextual Intelligence, which provides real-time content review and classification across the majority of the addressable footprint of the open web. That functionality gives advertisers greater control over the safety and suitability of content near their ads.

Moat customers, along with their marketing peers, added their strong voice to the vote results. “To be effective, advertising needs to be viewable by real people in brand-safe environments, which is why rigorous standards for ad measurement, verified by third party independent providers is so important,” said Yale Cohen, EVP Digital Investment Ad Standards, Publicis Media. “As a long-term Moat customer, we congratulate the Oracle Data Cloud team on this award.”

“As a Publisher, it is critical we provide our clients with the confidence that their ad dollars are being spent wisely on our platforms,” added Nicole Lesko, SVP Ad Product & Revenue for Meredith Corporation. “As a customer of Moat, we have come to rely on their best-in-class measurement to ensure our inventory is bot-free, viewable and safe across channels.”

Beyond Moat’s win, Oracle Data Cloud’s recognition in the Adweek survey extended across its full product suite, with additional top-three finishes against scores of companies in the categories of Data Supplier (Oracle Data Cloud) and Measurement and Analytics: Digital and Mobile Display Advertising (Moat). In fact, Oracle Data Cloud secured a top-three finish in every one of its product categories from Audience to Measurement and Context.

As a data-driven company, we are delighted that Adweek’s analysis of votes by agency and brand executives supports what hundreds of their peers already know: If you want to protect your brand with the best viewability, fraud, and brand safety solutions, there’s only one Moat.

For more information about Moat by Oracle Data Cloud and the full range of solutions offered, including brand safety, viewability and IVT measurement, please visit Moat.com.

All Nippon Airways Builds a Bridge between Japan and the Rest of the World

By Guest Author—Oct 17, 2019

All Nippon Airways (ANA) is the largest airline in Japan and one of the world’s leading carriers, carrying over 47 million passengers annually. Japan is already this decade’s fastest-growing major destination for tourism and by 2030, the country expects the number of international visitors to double to 60 million per year.

With many people expected to visit Tokyo for the Olympic and Paralympic Games next year, ANA wishes to bridge Japan and the rest of the world, providing a pleasant air-travel experience for all. “For ANA, this presents an opportunity to showcase our world-class services on a global stage,” says Manabu Yada, Manager, Corporate Office Procurement, Material & Services at ANA.

But the airline industry is crowded, and even at its size, ANA still needs to find ways to stand out. “The challenge we faced was finding a way to ensure our customers could trust they’re getting the best service in the market, while we remain profitable. To adopt to changes in a global business environment and make important business decisions fast, we needed to develop a system to visualize all procurement processes, comply with complex regulations, and optimize all procurement costs,” Yada said.

ANA implemented Oracle ERP Cloud to streamline how it approves invoices and manages its suppliers through automation and social collaboration. “Oracle ERP Cloud covers procurement processes and reduces required transactions. It also provides the tools to improve efficiency and productivity of our procurement team. In addition, it shows us the history of all transactions so we can reduce costs and risks of all processes and increase profitability, while staying compliant with all related regulations,” said Yada.

The airline also intends to use Oracle ERP Cloud for its 88 branches in the future and aims to cut procurement costs for indirect materials by 5%.

New Study: 64% of People Trust a Robot More Than Their Manager

Tue, 2019-10-15 08:00
Press Release
New Study: 64% of People Trust a Robot More Than Their Manager Global research highlights how AI is changing the relationship between people and technology at work

Redwood Shores, Calif.—Oct 15, 2019

People have more trust in robots than their managers, according to the second annual AI at Work study conducted by Oracle and Future Workplace, a research firm preparing leaders for disruptions in recruiting, development and employee engagement. The study of 8,370 employees, managers and HR leaders across 10 countries, found that AI has changed the relationship between people and technology at work and is reshaping the role HR teams and managers need to play in attracting, retaining and developing talent.

AI is Changing the Relationship Between People and Technology at Work

Contrary to common fears around how AI will impact jobs, employees, managers and HR leaders across the globe are reporting increased adoption of AI at work and many are welcoming AI with love and optimism.

  • AI is becoming more prominent with 50 percent of workers currently using some form of AI at work compared to only 32 percent last year. Workers in China (77 percent) and India (78 percent) have adopted AI over 2X more than those in France (32 percent) and Japan (29 percent).
  • The majority (65 percent) of workers are optimistic, excited and grateful about having robot co-workers and nearly a quarter report having a loving and gratifying relationship with AI at work.
  • Workers in India (60 percent) and China (56 percent) are the most excited about AI, followed by the UAE (44 percent), Singapore (41 percent), Brazil (32 percent), Australia/New Zealand (26 percent), Japan (25 percent), U.S. (22 percent), UK (20 percent) and France (8 percent).
  • Men have a more positive view of AI at work than women with 32 percent of men optimistic vs. 23 percent of women.
Workers Trust Robots More Than Their Managers

The increasing adoption of AI at work is having a significant impact on the way employees interact with their managers. As a result, the traditional role of HR teams and the manager is shifting.

  • 64 percent of people would trust a robot more than their manager and half have turned to a robot instead of their manager for advice.
  • Workers in India (89 percent) and China (88 percent) are more trusting of robots over their managers, followed by Singapore (83 percent), Brazil (78%), Japan (76 percent), UAE (74 percent), Australia/New Zealand (58 percent), U.S. (57 percent), UK (54 percent) and France (56 percent).
  • More men (56 percent) than women (44 percent) have turned to AI over their managers.
  • 82% of people think robots can do things better than their managers.
  • When asked what robots can do better than their managers, survey respondents said robots are better at providing unbiased information (26 percent), maintaining work schedules (34 percent), problem solving (29 percent) and managing a budget (26 percent).
  • When asked what managers can do better than robots, workers said the top three tasks were understanding their feelings (45 percent), coaching them (33 percent) and creating a work culture (29 percent).
AI is Here to Stay: Organizations Need to Simplify and Secure AI to Stay Competitive

The impact of AI at work is only just beginning and in order to take advantage of the latest advancements in AI, organizations need to focus on simplifying and securing AI at work or risk being left behind.

  • 76 percent of workers (and 81 percent of HR leaders) find it challenging to keep up with the pace of technological changes in the workplace.
  • Workers want a simplified experience with AI at work, asking for a better user interface (34 percent), best practice training (30 percent) and an experience that is personalized to their behavior (30 percent).
  • Security (31 percent) and privacy (30 percent) are the main concerns preventing workers from using AI at work.
  • Digital natives Gen Z (43 percent) and Millennials (45 percent) are more concerned about privacy and security at work than Gen X (29 percent) and Baby Boomers (23 percent).

“The latest advancements in machine learning and artificial intelligence are rapidly reaching mainstream, resulting in a massive shift in the way people across the world interact with technology and their teams. As this study shows, the relationship between humans and machines is being redefined at work, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to successfully managing this change. Instead, organizations need to partner with their HR organization to personalize the approach to implementing AI at work in order to meet the changing expectations of their teams around the world,” said Emily He, SVP, Human Capital Management Cloud Business Group, Oracle

“Over the past two years we’ve found that workers have become more optimistic as they’ve adopted AI in the workplace and HR is leading the way. The 2019 study shows that AI is redefining not only the relationship between worker and manager, but also the role of a manager in an AI-driven workplace. Based on the findings, managers will remain relevant in the future if they focus on being human and using their soft skills, while leaving the technical skills and routine tasks to robots,” said Dan Schawbel, Research Director at Future Workplace.

"Our 2019 results reveal that forward looking companies are already capitalizing on the power of AI," said Jeanne Meister Founding Partner, Future Workplace. “As workers and managers leverage the power of artificial intelligence in the workplace, they are moving from fear to enthusiasm as they see the possibility of being freed of many of their routine tasks and having more time to solve critical business problems for the enterprise.”

Methodology

Research findings are based on a global survey conducted by Savanta between July 2 to August 9, 2019. In total, 8,370 completed the survey. The study was administered online and fielded in 10 different countries (and in six languages). Permanent full-time employees between the ages 18-74 years old were eligible to participate. The survey targeted HR Leaders, Managers and Employees. Respondents are recruited through a number of different mechanisms, via different sources to join the panels and participate in market research surveys. All panelists have passed a double opt-in process and complete on average 300 profiling data points prior to taking part in surveys. Respondents are invited to take part via email and are provided with a small monetary incentive for doing so.

Oracle Equips Case Workers and Citizens to Address Complex Societal Problems

Tue, 2019-10-15 07:00
Press Release
Oracle Equips Case Workers and Citizens to Address Complex Societal Problems Comprehensive case management platform brings real-time data to bear on decisions by health and human services personnel.

Redwood Shores, Calif.—Oct 15, 2019

Taking a new people-centric approach to providing support and care, Oracle offers new services to citizens in need. New digital case management capabilities, now available in Oracle Customer Experience (CX) for Public Sector, provide a modern platform to help citizens, case workers, and third party social service providers deal with complex societal issues and achieve positive outcomes.

By offering real time access to vital data, Oracle’s solution will enable state and local organizations to take a more people-centric approach to providing support and care—an approach that has not previously been possible due to the limitations of older technologies. Care providers will be able to effectively launch new services to their citizens, and to easily manage complex interactions for cases that span many years and complex, changing family circumstances.

“Today’s digitally-empowered citizens demand easy access to health and human services agencies for critical support and care. And case workers expect accessible tools that can manage complex cases that often evolve over extended periods,” said Rob Tarkoff, executive vice president of Oracle CX product development. “Until now, there has been a serious gap in the comprehensiveness and sophistication of solutions to serve many of the needs of this market. With Oracle, case workers can now have real-time snapshots of client cases along with intelligent recommendations for next steps - even in the most complex situations. This enables workers to take immediate and potentially life-saving actions.”

The Oracle solution transforms traditional ways social service agencies have managed cases and served customers through the integration of modern digital technologies and channels. The platform integrates technologies spanning cloud, digital outreach, omni-channel service, case management, mobile, social, Internet of Things, and Artificial Intelligence while ensuring maximum security and information privacy.

The digital enablement of complex case management not only serves state and local health and human service organizations, but also other government agencies in areas as diverse as immigration, taxation, benefits, and city and state citizen engagement.

Oracle CX solutions for health and human services combine decades of experience with a broad cloud service portfolio that enables current IT infrastructures with a proven path to digital transformation. It offers comprehensive digital engagement solutions for several aspects of citizen engagement including real-time personalized advice, self-service portals with embedded knowledge management, and a digital application process for benefit programs which is accessible through mobile, web, social channels, chatbots, call centers, and local offices.

Top Universities Make the Grade with Oracle Cloud

Press Release
Top Universities Make the Grade with Oracle Cloud DePaul University and Ithaca College look to Oracle to cut costs and streamline operations

EDUCAUSE, Chicago—Oct 15, 2019

Higher education institutions are rapidly digitizing to meet industry demands for new models of teaching, learning and research. Those institutions seeking to build capacity for long-term innovation are increasingly moving to the cloud to compete in this evolving environment, as institutions across the U.S. continue to look to Oracle Cloud to increase business efficiency and improve student outcomes.

Oracle brings unparalleled advantages and opportunities to the Higher Education market, including the ability to reduce operational and student costs and help ensure fiscal sustainability.

Universities recently adopting Oracle Cloud include:

  • Ithaca College, a private liberal arts college founded over 125 years ago, will consolidate all of its applications with Oracle to operate on a single cloud platform. It is currently implementing Oracle’s E-Business Suite and HCM Cloud solutions, and is expanding to automate and migrate its financial and planning functions to the cloud. With the addition of Oracle ERP Cloud and EPM Cloud, Ithaca College expects to see an increase in staff and business efficiency, along with enhanced analysis, monitoring and management reporting throughout the planning and budgeting process.

“Oracle’s successful track record helping higher education institutions transition to the cloud inspired us to expand our partnership with them,” said David Weil, associate vice president and chief information officer, Ithaca College. “We’re confident that Oracle Cloud will enable us to streamline our operations to even better serve our students.”

  • DePaul University, the largest Catholic university in the country, will implement Oracle ERP Cloud and HCM Cloud and integrate them with its existing Oracle PeopleSoft Campus Solutions application. The interest to move to a modern system was based on the university’s desire to adopt best practices for business processes, and new capabilities such as AI and embedded intelligence to drive better efficiency and sustainability.

“We are proud to be the first institution using Oracle’s PeopleSoft solution to migrate to cloud in the Chicagoland area,” said Bob McCormick, vice president for Information Services of DePaul University, “At DePaul, we are looking forward to modernizing our business and demonstrating leadership in the higher education industry.”

“From financial pressures, to rising student expectations, the higher education industry is rapidly evolving. Oracle is committed to helping these institutions adapt and thrive through the change,” said Keith Rajecki, vice president of Oracle Public Sector, Education and Research. “We are proud to be partnering with Ithaca College and DePaul University to provide them with the industry’s most complete, scalable cloud to transform their operations and provide the agility they need to enhance financial planning functions.”

Oracle’s EPM Suite provides data on demand, enabling institutions to use their time more effectively and provide real business value. The solution elevates business outcomes through embedded intelligence and advanced analytics, while also helping to lower costs and gain continuous innovation.

Oracle ERP Cloud provides accelerated business outcomes real-time data for predictive insights to improve your decision-making and performance management that will help you improve business performance and drive operational excellence across the institution.

Oracle’s HCM Cloud provides a very powerful single, global human resources solution to help processes and local compliance needs while also engaging workforces throughout the entire talent lifecycle.

MESTEC Revolutionizes Manufacturing Performance with Oracle Autonomous Database

By Peter Schutt, Senior Director, Oracle—Oct 10, 2019

Manufacturing is a 24/7 industry where high availability is critical. MESTEC provides intelligent SaaS solutions to optimize the lifecycle from planning to execution for some of the world’s most prestigious manufacturers of submarines, missiles, micro-semiconductors, orthopedic hips, and pastry pies. Moving MESTEC’s legacy on-premises infrastructure to the Oracle Autonomous Database Cloud that has zero downtime allows the company to more strategically focus resources on innovating tools to improve manufacturing quality, cost, and delivery performance.

Using Oracle Autonomous Transaction Processing in combination with Microsoft Azure Interconnect has helped MESTEC cut its labor and infrastructure costs in half compared to an equivalent on-premises environment, and it is seeing workloads run up to 600% faster with half as many CPUs. Autonomous Transaction Processing patches, maintains, and tunes itself, providing a more secure environment that frees up resources to spend more valuable time on customer services and training. MESTEC also has greater flexibility to autoscale capacity up and down in seconds depending on demand, and can very easily and quickly onboard new customers and assume less risk with automatic disaster recovery.

MESTEC clients are seeing wide-ranging benefits from embracing autonomous technologies throughout manufacturing factories. There’s a 60% increase in labor productivity, a 50% reduction in customer complaints, and cost savings through a 20% reduction in working inventory. With MESTEC and Oracle, the factory of the future is available now.

GreenGo Gives Oracle Cloud the Green Light

GreenGo Gives Oracle Cloud the Green Light

By Guest Author, Oracle—Oct 10, 2019

When GreenGo launched in 2016, the Hungarian startup sought to offer an alternative mode of transport. The first electric car-sharing service in its area, GreenGo offers services to those who regularly travel around Hungary’s bustling capital, Budapest, but are not keen on maintaining a car or paying for parking in the city. Cars can be booked through the mobile application before pickup, and once the user has stopped using the car, the fee for usage is automatically withdrawn from the user’s bank account.

In the years since GreenGo first took to the streets, the company’s growth has been unstinting. The initial fleet of 45 cars rapidly expanded to more than 300 vehicles. This high-speed expansion of the service caused GreenGo to outgrow its existing on-premises solution.

A more scalable, flexible solution was needed, especially considering GreenGo’s ambitious business plans. GreenGo opted for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure to help drive it into the future.

The system has been running in the cloud for over six months, and since then, it has been working steadily. The problems caused by the increased load have disappeared. There are no slowdowns in the application during peak periods, so the mobile application used by customers is served by a stable operating system.

“Car sharing and the ‘appification’ of mobility transform the everyday and corporate use of cars. Oracle’s cloud-based services also play an exciting role in the life of a company handling complex and large data sets, like GreenGo,” said Bálint Michaletzky, GreenGo CEO.

Looking at the road ahead, GreenGo and Oracle are also working to move the front-end layer of the system into the cloud, a transition that GreenGo would like to go live with soon.

Oracle Opens Retail Innovation and Technology Center in Portugal

Thu, 2019-10-10 07:00
Press Release
Oracle Opens Retail Innovation and Technology Center in Portugal Delivers innovations in data science and AI to help retailers gain a competitive edge

PORTO, PORTUGAL—Oct 10, 2019

Competition to build retail mindshare and customer loyalty has never been more fierce. Brands must continually evolve their products and deliver a personalized approach to win the hearts and minds of customers. Delivering the technology that helps them do exactly that, Portugal Country Leader Bruno Morais, and Mike Webster, senior vice president and general manager Oracle Retail, today unveiled a new Innovation and Technology Center in Porto. The center will focus initially on delivering breakthrough retail innovations leveraging the latest technologies, including artificial intelligence and machine learning.

“Oracle Portugal is delighted to see Oracle’s Global Retail business unit’s commitment to and investment in people and technologies in Porto. Similarly, we are delighted to contribute to the development of Porto through the creation of this global technology and innovation hub,” said Morais. “As it is true for all Oracle offices, we will actively foster community support and get involved in local causes to enrich the area wherever we can.”

Porto is a vibrant city that delivers a balance of history and innovation. A report by CBRE states that Porto ranks in the top ten fast pace and growing technological clusters in the “EMEA Tech Cities: Opportunities in Technology Hotspots.” The technology team, including many developers, will be dedicated to creating bespoke integrations and enhancements to the Oracle Retail portfolio and re-usable assets that deliver increased value to customers.

In the past year, Oracle has logged roughly 13,000 person-days of development, focused on continuous innovation with Micro-Apps that integrate with the base code of the Oracle Retail portfolio.

“Porto is home to a strong pool of tech talent coveted by major tech employers in Europe to Portugal. So it made sense to expand our existing, globally renowned team of Oracle Retail solution delivery experts in Porto by creating a complementary center for innovation in the area,” noted Webster. “We believe that innovation listens more than it speaks. Our consulting team works hand in hand with our retail customers to understand their unique challenges and needs and translate those into technology extensions that align with our broader roadmap. The Innovation and Technology Center will be critical in delivering these customer-driven enhancements to our global retail community.”

As an example, a fast-fashion retailer had wondered how a key season was performing and trading, both locally and globally. To address this need, Oracle Retail Consulting developed a simple but effective solution, called Lifecycle Inventory Planning (LIP), that extends and integrates to forecasting and planning solutions. LIP overcomes typical item/store/day parameter management by using a revolutionary method to set system parameters coupled with machine learning. The data science model was able to help the retailer obtain an end-of-life inventory projection based on the forecast, inventory availability, and the replenishment rule setup–improving worldwide planning. This is just one of the many innovations generated by the Porto development team to-date.

The Oracle Innovation and Technology Center is located in the Centro Empresarial Lionesa Business Resort, near the beautiful River Leça and the Leça do Balio Monastery, which is convenient for the airport, main highways, and trains. Oracle will continue to draw talent from nearby Universities specializing in Business and Information Technology from the surrounding areas.

Ecommerce Leader Helps Mexican Brands Tap into $12B+ Market Opportunity Ibushak Drives Efficiencies and Enhances the Customer Experience with NetSuite

SuiteConnect, MEXICO CITY, Mexico—Oct 8, 2019

Ibushak, a Mexican ecommerce provider, is using Oracle NetSuite to help Mexican brands unlock new revenue opportunities and meet changing customer expectations. With NetSuite, Ibushak has streamlined financials, optimized inventory management and gained a comprehensive view into its core business processes so that it can personalize the customer experience and drive brand loyalty.

Founded in 2004 by brothers Mauricio and Salomon Bouzali, Ibushak is focused on making it easier for Mexican brands to conduct business online. The company currently works with more than 300 brands in Mexico and is tapping into a thriving industry, which is expected to reach $12.77 billion by 2023. To meet increasing demand that has seen its business grow by 120 percent in the last 4 years, Ibushak needed a unified business platform that could automate processes and scale to support its future growth. After careful evaluation, Ibushak selected NetSuite over Microsoft Dynamics and SAP.

“Our father had a successful 30-year career in the Mexican retail industry and taught us a lot, but at the time the industry was just scratching the surface,” said Mauricio Bouzali, co-founder and CEO, Ibushak. “In a single platform, NetSuite gives us the visibility, control and agility we need to streamline operations, drive customer satisfaction and enhance decision making. NetSuite will continue to support us in our journey as we grow well beyond the 300 brands and 62,000 products we have today.”

NetSuite has enabled Ibushak to take advantage of an integrated platform to automate and centralize key business functions including financials, order management and inventory management systems across its eight different business units. With a unified view into its core business functions, Ibushak has been able to provide its customers with the insights required to increase satisfaction and drive brand loyalty. By eliminating manual data entry with online orders, NetSuite has enabled Ibushak to more than double the number of orders shipped without decreasing service level agreements with its customers. In addition, Ibushak has enhanced decision making through increased visibility into financials.

“Technology has transformed the retail industry and consumers now expect things to happen seamlessly on their own terms, whenever and however they want,” said Gustavo Moussalli, LAD senior director, Oracle NetSuite. “Ibushak is helping brands operating in Mexico meet these changing customer expectations and unlock significant new revenue streams. With NetSuite, the Ibushak team will be able to focus on helping brands reach and engage customers in new ways as their business continues to grow.”

Medical Service Provider Restores Vision in Communities Across Mexico

Press Release
Medical Service Provider Restores Vision in Communities Across Mexico salauno Works to Give All Mexicans the Chance to See Well and Improve Their Lives with the Help of NetSuite

SuiteConnect, MEXICO CITY, Mexico—Oct 8, 2019

salauno, a nonprofit focused on delivering visual health services, is using Oracle NetSuite to support its mission of providing high-quality, accessible eye care services to all of Mexico. With NetSuite, salauno has been able to focus time and resources on its mission by increasing supply chain efficiency and gaining a single view of the financial data of its entire organization.

Founded in 2011, the company has performed more than 35,000 surgeries that have restored vision and provided low-cost and quality ophthalmologic care, including treatments like cataract surgery and diabetic retinopathy, to more than 300,000 patients. To ensure that its team can stay focused on their mission and reach more communities, salauno needed a unified business platform that could optimize its supply chain and financial management operations.

"In Mexico, only a third of the people who require visual correction seek treatment and this includes more than nine million who suffer from cataracts. We wanted to change that situation," said Javier Okhuysen, co-founder and director of salauno. "By providing valuable real-time information about our business, NetSuite has enabled us to streamline operations and drastically reduce costs. Which, in turn, allows us to help more people and offer new essential services to the community."

With NetSuite, salauno has been able to take advantage of a single platform to run its core business processes, including accounting, inventory management and sales. This has helped salauno increase the efficiencies across its business and offer its services at a cost up to 60 percent less. NetSuite will also help support salauno’s rapid expansion plans to reach 60 new clinics and four new surgical centers throughout Mexico by 2021.

"It’s amazing to see how many people in Mexico have fallen victim to unnecessary blindness," said Gustavo Moussalli, LAD senior director, Oracle NetSuite. "We are proud to support an organization like salauno that is helping restore the visual health of people across the country."

NetSuite supports more than 1,500 nonprofit organizations and social enterprises globally. salauno is currently benefiting from SuiteDonation. Part of the NetSuite Social Impact program, SuiteDonation helps nonprofits benefit from the power of technology by providing discounted licensing.

salauno’s mission will be showcased at SuiteConnect Mexico City. Attendees will have the chance to meet members of the salauno team and hear firsthand how the organization is changing visual health by providing high quality, low cost treatments. Attendees will also be able to learn about their eyesight with interactive colored lenses that reveal fun facts and images in the process.
