Oracle has been named a Leader in Gartner’s 2019 "Magic Quadrant for Warehouse Management Systems1" report for the fourth consecutive year. Oracle Warehouse Management (WMS) Cloud is positioned as a Leader based on its ability to execute and completeness of vision.

Of the 14 products evaluated, Oracle WMS Cloud was recognized as a Leader for its ability to execute and completeness of vision.

According to Gartner, “Leaders combine the uppermost characteristics of vision and thought leadership with a strong consistent Ability to Execute. Leaders in the WMS market are present in a high percentage of new WMS deals, and they win a significant number of them. They have robust core WMSs and offer reasonable — although not necessarily leading-edge — capabilities in extended WMS areas, such as labor management, work planning and optimization, slotting, returns management, yard management and dock scheduling, and value-added services. To be a Leader, a vendor doesn’t necessarily need to have the absolute broadest or deepest WMS application. Its offerings must meet most mainstream warehousing requirements in complex warehouses without significant modifications, and a substantial number of high-quality implementations must be available to validate this. Leaders must anticipate where customer demands, markets and technology are moving, and must have strategies to support these emerging requirements ahead of actual customer demand. Leading vendors should have coherent strategies to support SCE convergence, and must invest in and have processes to exploit innovation. Leaders also have robust market momentum, market penetration and market awareness as well as strong client satisfaction — in the vendor’s local markets as well as internationally. Because Leaders are often well-established in leading-edge and complex user environments, they benefit from a user community that helps them remain in the forefront of emerging needs. New Study: “Digital Natives” Value Brick and Mortar Stores More Than their Parents or Grandparents Global Study Highlights the Varying Shopping Expectations of Different Generations and the Role of Technology in Personalizing Retail

Redwood City, CA.—Jun 25, 2019

Despite clear differences in expectations among shoppers of different generations, almost half of retailers (44 percent) have made no progress in tailoring the in-store shopping experience according to a recent study conducted by Oracle NetSuite, Wakefield Research and The Retail Doctor. The global study of 1,200 consumers and 400 retail executives across the U.S., U.K. and Australia dispelled stereotypes around generations and found big differences in generational expectations across baby boomers, Gen X, millennials and Gen Z.

“We have seen decades of diminishing experiences in brick and mortar stores, and the differences identified in these results point to its impact on consumers over the years,” said Bob Phibbs, CEO, The Retail Doctor. “Retailers have fallen behind in offering in-store experiences that balance personalization and customer service but there’s an opportunity to take the reins back. The expectation from consumers is clear and it’s up to retailers to offer engaging and custom experiences that will cater to shoppers across a diverse group of generations.”

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder: Retailers struggle to keep stride with generational shoppers

The in-store shopping experience remains an important part of the retail environment for all generations, but the progress retailers are making to improve the in-store experience is being viewed differently by different generations.

  • Despite the stereotypes of “digital natives”, Gen Z and millennials (43 percent) are most likely to do more in-store shopping this year followed by Gen X (29 percent) and baby boomers (13 percent).
  • Gen Z and millennials (57 percent) had the most positive view of the current retail environment feeling it was more inviting, followed by Gen X (40 percent). Baby boomers (27 percent) were more likely to find the current retail environment less inviting than consumers overall.
  • Gen Z valued in-store interaction the least with 42 percent feeling more annoyed from increased interaction with retail associates. In contrast, millennials (56 percent), Gen X (44 percent) and baby boomer (43 percent) generations all noted they would feel more welcomed by more in-store interactions.

Retailers view emerging technologies through rose-colored glasses

While more than three quarters of retail executives (79 percent) believe having AI and VR in stores will increase sales, the study found that these technologies are not yet widely accepted by any generation.

  • Overall, only 14 percent of consumers believe that emerging technologies like AI and VR will have a significant impact on their purchase decisions.
  • Emerging tech in retail stores is most attractive to millennials (50 percent) followed by Gen Z (38 percent), Gen X (35 percent) and baby boomers (20 percent).
  • Perceptions of VR varied widely across different generations. Fifty-eight percent of Gen Z said VR would have some influence on their purchase decisions, while 59 percent of baby boomers said VR would have no influence on their purchase decision.

Insta-famous brands reach Gen Z and millennial consumers, but not as much as retailers think

While almost all retail executives (98 percent) think that engaging customers on social media is important to building stronger relationships with them, the study found a big disconnect with consumers across all generations.

  • Overall, only 12 percent of consumers think their engagement with brands on social media has a significant impact on the way they think or feel about a brand.
  • Among those who engage with brands on social media, Gen Z (38 percent) consumers are much more likely than other generations to engage with retailers on social to get to know the brand compared to millennials (25 percent) and baby boomers (21 percent).
  • Gen Z (65 percent) consumers and millennials (63 percent) believe their engagement with brands on social media platforms have an impact on their relationship with brands. 
  • More than half of baby boomers (53 percent) and 29 percent of Gen X consumers do not engage with brands on social media.

“After all the talk about brick and mortar stores being dead, it’s interesting to see that ‘digital natives’ are more likely to increase their shopping in physical stores this year than any other generation,” said Greg Zakowicz, senior commerce marketing analyst, Oracle NetSuite. “Stepping back, these findings fit with broader trends we have been seeing around the importance of immediacy and underlines why retailers cannot afford to make assumptions about the needs and expectations of different generations. It really is a complex puzzle and as this study clearly shows, retailers need to think carefully about how they meet the needs of different generations.”

Methodology

For this survey, 1,200 consumers and 400 retail executives were surveyed around the overall retail environment, in-store and online shopping experiences and advanced technologies. Both retailers and consumers were surveyed from three global markets including the U.S., U.K. and Australia with retail executives representing organizations between $10-100 million in annual sales.

Oracle announced the availability of Oracle Financial Services Anti Money Laundering (AML) Express Edition targeted at small- and mid-sized banks. It provides a single, unified platform to efficiently detect, investigate, and report suspected money laundering and terrorist financing activity to comply with evolving regulations and guidelines.

Smaller banks need to address regulations and compliance the same as global top-tier banks but must do so with significantly smaller IT budgets and limited resources. AML Express uses new architecture principles to offer a choice of deployment and includes all the core functionality needed to fight financial crime.

Redwood Shores, Calif.—Jun 19, 2019

Oracle Corporation (NYSE: ORCL) today announced fiscal 2019 Q4 results and fiscal 2019 full year results. Total Quarterly Revenues were $11.1 billion, up 1% in USD and up 4% in constant currency compared to Q4 last year. Cloud Services and License Support revenues were $6.8 billion, while Cloud License and On-Premise License revenues were $2.5 billion. Total Cloud Services and License Support plus Cloud License and On-Premise License revenues were $9.3 billion, up 3% in USD and 6% in constant currency.

Q4 GAAP Operating Income was up 2% to $4.3 billion and GAAP operating margin was 38%. Non-GAAP Operating Income was up 4% to $5.3 billion and non-GAAP operating margin was 47%. GAAP Net Income was up 14% to $3.7 billion and non-GAAP Net Income was up 3% to $4.1 billion. GAAP Earnings Per Share was $1.07, while non-GAAP Earnings Per Share was $1.16.

Short-term deferred revenues were $8.4 billion. Operating cash flow for fiscal 2019 was $14.6 billion.

For fiscal 2019, Total Revenues were $39.5 billion, slightly higher in USD and up 3% in constant currency. Cloud Services and License Support revenues were $26.7 billion, while Cloud License and On-Premise License revenues were $5.9 billion. Total Cloud Services and License Support plus Cloud License and On-Premise revenues were $32.6 billion, up 2% in USD and 4% in constant currency.

Fiscal 2019 GAAP Operating Income was $13.5 billion, and GAAP operating margin was 34%. Non-GAAP Operating Income was $17.4 billion, and non-GAAP operating margin was 44%. GAAP Net Income was $11.1 billion, while non-GAAP Net Income was $13.1 billion. GAAP Earnings Per Share increased 251% to $2.97, while non-GAAP Earnings Per Share was up 16% to $3.52.

“In Q4, our non-GAAP operating income grew 7% in constant currency—which drove EPS well above the high end of my guidance,” said Oracle CEO, Safra Catz. “Our high-margin Fusion and NetSuite cloud applications businesses are growing rapidly, while we downsize our low-margin legacy hardware business. The net result of this shift away from commodity hardware to cloud applications was a Q4 non-GAAP operating margin of 47%, the highest we’ve seen in five years.”

“Our Fusion ERP and HCM cloud applications suite revenues grew 32% in FY19,” said Oracle CEO, Mark Hurd. “Our NetSuite ERP cloud applications revenues also grew 32% this year. These strong results extend Oracle’s already commanding lead in worldwide Cloud ERP. Our cloud applications businesses are growing faster than our competitors. That said, let me call your attention to the following approved statement from industry analyst IDC.”

Per IDC’s latest annual market share results, Oracle gained the most market share globally out of all Enterprise Applications SaaS vendors three years running—in CY16, CY17 and CY18.

“We added over five thousand new Autonomous Database trials in Q4,” said Oracle Chairman and CTO, Larry Ellison. “Our new Gen2 Cloud Infrastructure offers those customers a compelling array of advance technology features including our self-driving database that automatically encrypts all your data, backs itself up, tunes itself, upgrades itself, and patches itself when a security threat is detected. It does all of this autonomously—while running—without the need for any human intervention, and without the need for any downtime. No other cloud infrastructure provides anything close to these autonomous features.”

The Board of Directors also declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.24 per share of outstanding common stock. This dividend will be paid to stockholders of record as of the close of business on July 17, 2019, with a payment date of July 31, 2019.

The retail industry is more complex than ever. Not only are consumers looking for high-quality goods at fair prices, but they also want assurance that their purchases are safe and ethically sourced. That requires retailers to maintain transparency across their global supply chain networks. With new advancements in reporting and analytics and continued extension of integrations, Oracle Retail Brand Compliance Management Cloud Service is helping retailers monitor the integrity of their materials and end products, to improve customer experiences and protect their brands. 

Oracle Retail Brand Compliance is specifically designed to enable retailers, restaurants, food service providers and manufacturers to source, develop, track and market products. In 2016, a multistate listeria outbreak in the U.S. impacted several name brand grocery chains. Microsoft Corp. and Oracle Corp. on Wednesday announced a cloud interoperability partnership enabling customers to migrate and run mission-critical enterprise workloads across Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud. Enterprises can now seamlessly connect Azure services, like Analytics and AI, to Oracle Cloud services, like Autonomous Database. By enabling customers to run one part of a workload within Azure and another part of the same workload within the Oracle Cloud, the partnership delivers a highly optimized, best-of-both-clouds experience. Taken together, Azure and Oracle Cloud offer customers a one-stop shop for all the cloud services and applications they need to run their entire business.

Connecting Azure and Oracle Cloud through network and identity interoperability makes lift-and-improve migrations seamless. This partnership delivers direct, fast and highly reliable network connectivity between two clouds, while continuing to provide first-class customer service and support that enterprises have come to expect from the two companies. In addition to providing interoperability for customers running Oracle software on Oracle Cloud and Microsoft software on Azure, it enables new and innovative scenarios like running Oracle E-Business Suite or Oracle JD Edwards on Azure against an Oracle Autonomous Database running on Exadata infrastructure in the Oracle Cloud.

  • Connect Azure and Oracle Cloud seamlessly, allowing customers to extend their on-premises datacenters to both clouds. This direct interconnect is available starting today in Ashburn (North America) and Azure US East, with plans to expand additional regions in the future.
  • Unified identity and access management, via a unified single sign-on experience and automated user provisioning, to manage resources across Azure and Oracle Cloud. Also available in early preview today, Oracle applications can use Azure Active Directory as the identity provider and for conditional access.
  • Supported deployment of custom applications and packaged Oracle applications (JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft, Oracle Retail, Hyperion) on Azure with Oracle databases (RAC, Exadata, Autonomous Database) deployed in Oracle Cloud. The same Oracle applications will also be certified to run on Azure with Oracle databases in Oracle Cloud.
  • A collaborative support model to help IT organizations deploy these new capabilities while enabling them to leverage existing customer support relationships and processes.
  • Oracle Database will continue to be certified to run in Azure on various operating systems, including Windows Server and Oracle Linux.

The use of electric vehicles (EVs) is growing at a record rate, with the International Energy Agency (IEA) predicting that the number of electric cars on the road will rise from 3.1 million in 2017 to 125 million in 2030. Enabling utilities to intelligently manage this new energy demand on the power grid, Oracle Utilities has unveiled a breakthrough in EV detection.

Tapping deep machine learning, Oracle Utilities Analytics Insights is able to identify the presence of an EV, show the time and frequency of charging and disaggregate the energy being consumed by the vehicle with advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) data. With this intelligence, utilities can reliably plan for the energy infusion needed to power EVs at scale and engage customers to charge at the times that are the least expensive for them and best for the health of the energy grid. The new EV detection capabilities from Oracle Utilities Analytics Insights are currently being piloted by a number of utilities.

“With solar, wind and storage technologies now constituting 90 percent of investment interest, the road is paved for deeper decarbonization of the electricity sector,” said Ben Kellison, director grid research, Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables. “The case for transport electrification has never been stronger and the rapid growth in investment interest from car manufacturers is a confirmation of the future consumer demand for EVs. Utilities are now faced with an increasingly clean and decentralized system and they need new data and analytic packages to support a new planning paradigm.” 

Impact of the EV Explosion on the Energy Grid

The influx of EVs could represent an average additional growth of 1-4 percent in peak load on the grid over the next few decades, according to a report by McKinsey. While this may seem modest, the impact will be highly volatile and cause unpredictable spikes at the local sub-station and feeder levels in residential areas. This load is projected to reach as high as 30 percent peak growth in certain urban areas that are hotspots for EV adoption.

While this transportation development represents an important step forward in reducing carbon emissions, most electricity grids were created long before EVs were a commercially viable consumer product. As transportation continues to evolve from gas to the grid, utilities must plan for an uptick in energy demand that will vary dramatically by area. 

“With almost every major auto manufacturer releasing new EV models in the coming years, the window of time for utilities to act is closing,” said Dan Byrnes, SVP of product development, Oracle Utilities. “The intelligence our analytics provide is essential for utilities to make needed assessments on grid investments and in tandem, work as trusted advisors to customers who may be in the dark as to how owning an EV is impacting their energy footprint and bill. From utility optimization to proven customer engagement, only Oracle offers a complete package to manage the explosion of EVs.”

Powering Better EV Planning and Engagement

The Oracle EV detection capabilities are powered by more than a decade of research and experience disaggregating household energy data from billions of data points collected from 60 million households across 100 utilities. Oracle’s trained data models can be deployed for each specific household’s usage to understand whether a customer has an EV, how they interact with their EV chargers, and where EVs are clustering on the distribution grid. As such, utilities will be able to better plan for and manage the operational impact of EVs as a new distributed energy resource (DER) on the grid.

From a customer perspective, charging an EV can increase a typical household’s energy usage by 15 percent or more and potentially double usage during peak demand times. With the offering, utilities will have the tools to roll-out intuitive, user-friendly EV adoption customer journeys and time-of-use (TOU) plans to engage, educate and reward owners for charging during non-peak times. In the future, these same kinds of engagement programs can also be used for utilities to buy-back unused energy from their customers’ EV batteries to help balance energy supply and demand in times of need.

“EVs will have an impact on every part of a utility’s operations—from grid stability and regulatory affairs to customer billing and engagement,” added Byrnes. “With Oracle, our customers have the tools and intelligence they need to make better decisions, maximize outcomes, and increase customer satisfaction every step of the journey.”

The ‘Unprecedented Challenge’ of Cybersecurity in an Age of Burgeoning Threats

Technological and legal complexities abound in this age of heightened cybersecurity threats—including a rise in state-sponsored hacking. This “unprecedented challenge” was the topic of conversation between Dorian Daley, Oracle executive vice president and general counsel, and Edward Screven, Oracle’s chief corporate architect. Here are five key takeaways from their conversation:

1. Some good news: Businesses are aware of cybersecurity challenges in a way they were not even just a few years ago, when many considered security, generally, as a priority, but didn’t go much beyond that thought according to Screven. “It’s [become] a front-and-center kind of issue for our customers,” Daley agreed.

2. These same customers would like to make data security “someone else’s problem,” and are right to think that way, Screven added. In this context, that “someone else” is a tech vendor able to design technology that is inherently more secure than what non-tech businesses could design for themselves.

3. Regulations around data privacy are getting more complicated, starting with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation, Daley noted. The issues of data privacy and data security constitute slightly different sides to the same problem, she said, adding “what’s happening on the privacy side is really an explosion of regulatory frameworks around the world.”

4. There’s only so much that employees can do—no matter how skilled they may be. Recent research shows that while most companies cite human error as a leading cause of data insecurity, they also keep throwing more people at a problem that can’t really be solved without a level of automation commensurate with the sophistication and volume of attacks. “There is a lack of sufficient awareness about what technology can actually do for customers,” Daley noted.

Fast, “autonomous” or self-applying software patches and updates are a solid way to mitigate or even prevent data loss from cyber hacks. Many of the attacks and subsequent data leaks over the past few years could have been avoided had available software patches been applied in a timely fashion.

AI and machine learning tech can catch far more anomalies, like unauthorized system access, which might indicate a security problem much faster than human experts can, eliminating issues before they get serious.

5. Screven is skeptical that international treaties, if such things could be crafted, would eradicate state-sponsored cyber hacking because much of that activity happens under the covers by contractors that can be disavowed by the states.

Thus, “the same person who’s out stealing your credit card today is out trying to steal plans for [Hellfire] missiles tomorrow,” Screven said.

An increasing number of businesses are turning to Oracle Autonomous Database - the industry’s first self-driving, self-securing, self-repairing database—to gain deeper and more meaningful data insight, faster than ever before. The result has been freeing employees to do more value-added work—in large part thanks to deeper, faster insights into data than has been possible beforehand.

According to Hwee-Xian Tan, Senior Analyst, SoHo and SME Research, “Asia-Pacific enterprises [are] opening up to and having a sharper appetite for database-as-a-service (DBaaS) propositions with AI and ML features being particularly strong drivers for enterprise migration to cloud-based database environments. This is due to the cost reductions they deliver, and their ability to derive new business insights at speed. This has the potential to shift the global cloud arms race amongst hyperscale cloud players towards those that have a strong play in controlling enterprise databases—most of which still reside in a legacy client-server infrastructure.”

Among the Asian companies using Oracle Autonomous Database are China Eastern, Fadada, Bitmain and Kingold from China, Vodafone Fiji, Hong Kong Maxim’s Group, National Pharmacies and Applied Precision Medicine from Australia, Forth Smart, and Rangsit University from Thailand.

Innovating in vending machines

Forth Smart, which operates more than 120,000 vending machines that customers use to do things like top-up their mobile phones and e-wallets and transfer money to friends and family, generates around 2 million transactions per day. Pawarit Ruengsuksilp, business development analyst at Forth Smart, said it can now generate real-time insight into its network of vending machines, which previously would have taken three or four days. “Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse has been a complete game-changer for us,” he said. “This has had a significant impact across our financial reporting, ability to undertake complex segmentation and predictive analytics, allowing us to focus more of our efforts on innovation.”

Cooking up more profits in food

Hong Kong Maxim’s Group operates more than 1,300 outlets encompassing 70+ brands in the fast-paced food industry in the Hong Kong and Macau regions, as well as in Mainland China and South East Asia. All that activity today results in more than 600,000 transaction records per day in Hong Kong alone, notes Louis Mah, the company’s director of Information Technology.

Hong Kong Maxim’s Group is using a mix of Autonomous Data Warehouse and Oracle Analytics Cloud, along with detail from its ERP systems, to extract extremely timely and valuable information regarding consumer habits and behavior. This allows the company to “rapidly adapt to changes in how our different restaurants are performing,” said Louis Mah, Director, Information Technology.

Deep data analytics power new insights

Kingold, the diversified Chinese company, is using Autonomous Data Warehouse and Oracle Analytics Cloud to streamline how it collects and analyzes information, allowing it to “completely transform the way we operate,” according to its CIO, Steven Chang.

No wonder Oracle Autonomous Database has become the most successful new product introduction in Oracle’s 40-year history. According to Steve Daheb, senior vice president, Oracle Cloud, “Today we are seeing users across the globe realizing the benefit of autonomous.”

One of the largest family-run retail business conglomerates in Vietnam, IMEX Pan Pacific Group (IPPG), just started using Oracle Cloud’s unified suite of cloud technologies to efficiently and securely manage huge volumes of data from the inventory and warehousing, and to improve decision-making processes across all of its subsidiaries.

It’s no surprise that the cloud implementation is helping reduce complexity, providing IPPG managers with a single view into core business operations. That has helped enhance decision making, increased financial productivity, and is driving efficiencies across its complex business structure, said Mrs. Le Hong Thuy Tien, president, IMEX Pan Pacific Group.

Putting technology in peoples’ hands

How Oracle Won Over Blockchain Bellwether Everledger

It’s no small thing that Everledger, the pioneer in so-called digital provenance tracking, has embraced Oracle’s blockchain technology as its own.

Everledger’s blockchain-based platform is trusted by many industries including diamonds, colored gemstones, fine wine, and art. The ability to transparently track the provenance and lifetime journey of assets as they move across global supply chains is especially critical for high value goods. These industries are more susceptible than most to theft, fraud and counterfeit – in the diamond industry alone, fraud events cost the insurance industry millions of dollars a year.

As blockchain becomes an important data store in the enterprise, the Oracle Blockchain Platform enables users to capture blockchain transaction history and current state data for analytics as well as integrate it with other data sources.

  • Database access - Data is an integral part of blockchain. With much of the world’s data resident in Oracle systems, the use of Oracle Blockchain Platform to seamlessly link to those repositories will enable these same customers to leverage both their existing data stores and data on the Everledger blockchain.
  • Analytics - Oracle Blockchain Platform’s ability to connect to the rich histories stored in an organisation’s existing database means that Everledger can seamlessly enable analytics integration for highly visual interactive dashboards and reports.
  • Monitoring of network health, transaction rates, and other statistics, and other elements of blockchain administration/configuration, are made easier by enhanced REST APIs, which also simplify integration with existing enterprise IT tools.
  • Out of the box plug and play capabilities from the Oracle Blockchain Platform makes it not only easy for Everledger to get off the ground, but will also easier for deployment.
  • Developer tools - Additionally, the query tools for Oracle Blockchain Platform link into things like smart contract support standard SQL-based ledger queries, enabling organisations to leverage the skill sets their developers already have, thereby reducing the complexity of developing chaincode and boosting performance.
