Oracle 10g
Shutdown database for backup, everything fine
Went to startup and this message
SQL> connect / AS sysdba;
Connected to an idle instance.
SQL> startup
ORA-01261: Parameter db_recovery_file_dest destination string cannot be translated
ORA-01262: Stat failed on a file destination directory
Linux Error: 2: No such file or directory
SQL>

Check your parameter db_recovery_file_dest and confirm if it is a valid path and oracle have the privilege to write on it.
Try:
SQL> start nomount
SQL> create pfile='/tmp/init.txt' from spfile;
find db_recovery_file_dest in file /tmp/init.txt
